  • In partnership with Isaiah 55, we expect to use this opportunity to share the Gospel, hand out Bibles, and invite the youth we meet to be part of the after school program hosted weekly in the neighborhood.  We will partner with a reformed church, Camino de Fe, in this work.

BACKGROUND:  Reynosa is located on the U.S./Mexico Border, just South of McAllen, Texas and is a large city with a floating population of 1,000,000.  Transient people from Central America and other parts of Mexico transit in and through the city with the hope and expectation of reaching the United States.  Reynosa depends heavily on the foreign-run factories (maquilas) to supply a labor source, and Aquiles Serdán, the neighborhood in which Isaiah 55 Ministries resides and serves, has long been the home of prostitution and drug trafficking.

Isaiah 55 Ministries was established in 2005 as the first (and only) deaf school in Reynosa and the only deaf vocational program in Mexico.  Isaiah 55 provides education for deaf children who would otherwise be marginalized in and by their community.  In addition to general education, the Ministry shares the message of reconciliation to God with the students and their families.  Sign language classes are taught for the parents and siblings of deaf students.  The Ministry also provides an after school center providing a shelter against the lure of the cartels and the sex industry.  Isaiah 55 Ministries is working to develop a community centered on the worship of Jesus Christ and equipped to provide for their families with honorable work.

The proximate location of Isaiah 55 Ministries in Reynosa, Mexico provides the Redeemer Presbyterian Church body a ripe opportunity to serve alongside some of the missionaries already supported by our congregation through prayer and finances.  Medical mission work may enable added partnership with these servants of Christ on the Border.  The medical/dental clinic work is incidental and secondary to the prime mission of reaching people with the truth of the Gospel.  As an adaptation of Betsy Aeschliman’s piece on The Ministry of Presence, our goal is to assist the local missionaries and church efforts in Aquiles Serdán.  We will be “bridesmaids to the Bride” and actually take a ‘backseat’ to her, the local Church.

We expect to set up and run a medical clinic at one of the local migrant shelters providing care for, primarily, Central Americans who do not have access to healthcare in Mexico.  Furthermore, temporary clinic work will be offered to the people living in the community around Isaiah 55 Ministries.  Wound care and health education are anticipated to be the greatest needs for the people in this community.  We also expect to use this opportunity to share the Gospel, hand out Bibles, and invite the youth we meet to be part of the after school program hosted weekly in the neighborhood.  Depending on the perceived needs of the Isaiah 55 Missionaries, medical clinic work and health education may be a service Redeemer can provide to this community on a recurring basis.
