The Seeking Shepherd

April 12, 2017
Tom Gibbs
With heart-piercing beauty, Christina Rosetti reminds us on this Holy Week that even our capacity to appreciate the anguish of Christ's suffering on the cross and to rest in its momentous achievement is a work of God's saving grace. We remain dependent upon his sovereign initiative. Left to ourselves, our hearts remain stony and indifferent to Jesus' costly love. Yet, when they are stricken with God's unyielding truth and mercy, living waters begin to gush in heart-felt wonder, thankfulness and praise. The Good Shepherd is both the ...

Expecting the good news.

April 07, 2017
Haley Wachdorf
This week I heard a piece of good news. It was a simple piece of news that took about four words to convey and does not impact me directly. But I knew it was news that had been hoped for a long time, and maybe because of that, hearing it was overpoweringly good. I jumped up out of my chair and clapped and was inappropriately loud in an office setting. I texted my husband on a business trip to tell it to him, too. And as we texted back and forth I told him “I was surprised by how much I had wanted to hear some good news.” I think ...

Singing on Palm Sunday!

April 03, 2017
Sarah Beaugh
Children in Pre-K through first grade are invited to sing in the Palm Sunday service on Sunday, April 9. Children who wish to sing may be dropped off in the Training in the Pews room by 8:45 a.m. before the first service or 10:30 a.m. before the second service. Children are welcomed to participate in both services or just one. We will practice, line up, and the children will receive their palm branches for the service. They will enter and exit the sanctuary together. You can meet your children in the foyer after they have exited the ...

Flooding in Peru

March 27, 2017
Victor Martinez
Recently, severe rains have battered the nation of Peru, causing widespread flooding in areas that usually receive a half-inch of rain each year. In the city of Trujillo, which has experienced flash flooding after 10 days of heavy storms, virtually every significant avenue and street has turned into a raging river. Peru Mission, a ministry partner of Redeemer based in Trujillo, which hosted a Redeemer mission team in the summer of 2016, has requested our support as they respond to this national tragedy. Your gift will allow our friends ...

Starting a Lenten Tradition with your Family

March 06, 2017
Sarah Beaugh
It can be daunting to think about how to meaningfully embrace the season of Lent with your children. Growing up in a church tradition that did not observe this season, I saw Lent as a barren ritual that my friends who observed it couldn’t even really explain to me. It wasn’t until adulthood, or really motherhood, that I came to understand that Lent wasn’t about working my way to salvation, but rather working out my salvation. It wasn’t until I recognized that I regularly look to other things and other people to deal with life’s difficulties ...

Lent: Remembering what Christ has done for us

February 28, 2017
Tom Gibbs
Beginning with Ash Wednesday this week, Redeemer joins with the church around the world in entering into the season of Lent, a 40-day period of preparation for our remembrance of Christ’s crucifixion and celebration of his resurrection. As we embark upon this intentional contemplation of Christ’s work, it is important for us to remember that Lent’s significance is not found in what we do or are going to do to be like Jesus. Rather, the significance is found in remembering what Jesus has done for us in our place. Lent, a term connected to ...

To Pray or To Post

February 07, 2017
Tom Gibbs
Like many of you, I traverse the online world of social media with a little fear and trepidation. After all, how critically important is my sharing on Facebook or Twitter all my opinions and/or objections on the daily news cycle? Are my internal rants and pious sounding reflections (they always sound pious to me, right?) really that relevant to the cultural conversation? Are these acts of faithfulness or vanity? It can be hard to sort out. Obviously, even by writing this blog and linking my FB page to it I am giving some credence to ...

Children's Choir Spring 2017

February 06, 2017
Joel Cook
Hi Parents! Just a reminder that we have just 2 more weeks for enrollment in choir! Please consider this great opporunity for your students (2nd-5th grade). We are treating each semester of choir separately. What that means is that if you participated in the fall, you will not automatically be enrolled for the spring. Additionally, if you are interested, you can absolutely sign up for this semester as well. Dates for choir performances include singing on Palm Sunday (April 9), and Maundy Thursday (April 13). Rehearsals are at church ...

2016 Ministry Report

February 04, 2017
Tom Gibbs
View the full ministry report here. Dear Redeemer Members and Friends, Today we celebrate 14 years of worshipping together as a congregation! What began in 2002 as a small, home-based Bible study has grown today into a thriving, Gospel-centered and city-focused congregation of almost 800 diverse members, all sharing a commitment to minister to San Antonio and the entire region of South Texas. This is truly extraordinary and should move our hearts to praise God. Even more exciting is to consider how Redeemer’s vision of being an anchor ...
