Dear Redeemer Members and Friends,

On February 1st, Redeemer celebrates its 12th anniversary of worship in our new downtown facility. When I consider all that has happened over the almost thirteen years since Tara and I moved our family to San Antonio to launch Redeemer Presbyterian Church, it is truly remarkable and the reason for profound thanksgiving to God. While we may have traveled only two short blocks on the map from our original worship location at The Bright Shawl, the journey taken as a faith community in exploring the grandeur of God’s glory, the freeing power of God’s grace and summons of God’s mission to our city has been far more circuitous and unpredictable. Through every moment though, Jesus’ promise that “I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matt. 28:20)” has proven true.

When Redeemer began, the invitation went out to our city to join a God-saturated faith expedition rooted in the dynamic power of the Gospel and directed towards the extension of God’s kingdom in the city of San Antonio. In those days, there was no building at which to marvel. There were no burgeoning ministries to our youth and children. And, there were no swelling rolls of members. What we did have, however, was far more significant than these things—the word of Christ received and proclaimed.

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

As with the Word that spoke the universe and all living things into existence, so the living and eternal Word revealed in Jesus Christ has birthed and formed Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Knowing him and his cross-bearing work unleashes a Divine power that dwarfs all of the powers of this world. In fact, whether we have connected the dots or not, Jesus is the reason for every earthly and spiritual blessing we have received. “What do you have that you did not receive? (1 Cor. 4:7)?”.

Therefore, when we consider the path forward for Redeemer church (and it’s exciting!) our course must always be informed by what has guided us from the beginning—the unseen and all-powerful reality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Of course, we will strive for excellence and vibrancy in our worship offerings, continue to develop more and better ministry programs for our membership, think strategically and contextually about mission and culture and learn how to manage and maximize the use of our downtown facilities. Budgets will grow and our reach will expand. But, it is far more important to remain ever committed to the seed of the Word already given, which has taken root, is bearing fruit in our lives and reaching those who are just now coming to our church. The way forward then, remains to abide in the Way, the Truth and the Life given in Jesus Christ!

Happy Anniversary Redeemer!
