Lenten Reflections on Prayer  and Fasting

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. –Matthew 6:9–13

“Prayer is laying one’s hand on the very throne of grace.  Fasting is reaching up with the other hand.” –Doug Kelly

“Fasting is a way to add intensity and depth to our conversations with God, a way to express that there is no sustenance, no fullness, no joy, no endurance in our lives without God, that with him we have everything we need, and without him, we truly have nothing, no matter what else we have.” –Tim Keller

Fasting makes room to be filled with more of God directly! Fasting is also a way to get in touch with and express to God an intense need for direction, or deliverance, or forgiveness and renewal. You see all of these expressions played out in Scripture. –John Piper
