Session unveils plan to resume public worship.

May 07, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! Ever since Texas Governor Abbott chose to begin a phased reopening of Texas, Redeemer’s staff, pastors and Session have been carefully considering the emerging situation and its impact on Redeemer. Last night the Session was able to meet and formulated a plan to allow Redeemer to gather again for public worship at our downtown facility starting on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. This plan is cautious and is in full compliance with our governor’s recommendations, which were provided to churches on April 27, ...

Pray for 2020 Officer Elections.

May 04, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Last week, the Session had the privilege of sitting down with those who have most recently completed officer training at Redeemer and is pleased to announce their candidacy for office. A congregational meeting has been called for Sunday, June 7th, to elect elders and deacons to serve in the 2023 class of officers. Due to social-distancing measures currently in place, the meeting shall commence immediately following the first service and remain open throughout the morning to allow for all communicant members desiring a vote to have ...

Thoughts on communion observance - A letter from our Senior Pastor

April 15, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! One of the important questions facing the Church (the church universal and local) today is whether we should or should not continue to observe Communion, The Lord’s Supper or The Eucharist, as it is variously called. Given that this sacrament is observed weekly at Redeemer, and was also an essential element of regular worship in the early church, forgoing its observance is a significant decision and requires some explanation. At its most recent meeting, the Session was able to take this matter up and ...

United Day of Prayer and Fasting

April 07, 2020
Day of Prayer and Fasting, Good Friday, April 10 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11.28) The whole world is in the throes of a coronavirus pandemic that is spreading death, illness, economic turmoil, unemployment, isolation, panic, and fear. In such desperate times, the people of God should humble themselves and pray to almighty God for his grace, mercy, and love to heal us, restore us, and relieve us from this crushing burden of disease. In response to the ravages of this historic ...

A Short, Practical Guide for Prayer and Fasting

April 07, 2020
Richard Pratt
These are tumultuous times that call for prayer and fasting. Deadly disease runs rampant; the world’s economies are unstable; peace and safety are threatened at every turn. Now, “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). No matter what trials we face, all of Christ’s followers “are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Still, many of us struggle during these times as never before with hopelessness, loneliness, financial ruin, ...

April 2 Letter from our Senior Pastor

April 02, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! Like me, I'm sure that you're finding it hard to believe that we are now into the third week of "sheltering in place" in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It can seem like things have completely shut down. But, of course, they have not. Routines and responsibilities continue, although differently. That's especially true for Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Though we are not able to join together for worship, bible study, prayer, fellowship and mission in our traditional ways, we are learning ...

Caring for Neighbors During a Crisis

March 25, 2020
Rev. Victor Martinez
Last Sunday Pastor Tom called us to respond to the COVID-19 crisis with faith, for our own peace of mind and so we can boldly love our neighbors. This communication is meant to help you pray and think about how to engage the needs around you. We know that love requires caution with our health and the health of others, but also calls us to proactively care for one another and people in our neighborhoods and workplaces. As Christians, we should react distinctively different than others, who are led by panic and overwhelmed by crisis. Jesus ...

A Prayer for the Church in the Early Days of the COVID-19 Pandemic

March 24, 2020
Walter Henegar
A Prayer for the Church in the Early Days of the COVID-19 Pandemic Almighty God, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend, You who sit enthroned over the flood— We are staggering in the surf of breakers bringing bad news, and worse news, while an invisible menace laps at our doorstep. Father of all mercies, have mercy on us. We are anxious, exhausted, angry, and sad. We need your peace that surpasses understanding to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Be our refuge and strength; be our very present help in this time ...

March 18 Letter from our Senior Pastor regarding coronavirus.

March 18, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
March 18, 2020 Dear members and attenders, "Welcome to the new normal!" I think that's what we are all coming to terms with. Who would have thought six months ago that we'd be negotiating a world-wide pandemic surrounding COVID-19 virus, and that terms like social-distancing and self-quarantine would actually be understandable? But this is the "new normal," and the latest estimates suggest that these changes to our lifestyle are going to be with us for a while. Thankfully, as I reminded us on Sunday, COVID-19 has not taken our God by ...

March 13 Letter from our Senior Pastor regarding coronavirus.

March 13, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
March 13, 2020 Dear members and attenders, As many of you now know, San Antonio verified its first travel-related coronavirus case today. City officials confirm that this person has no relation to any of the evacuees at JBSA-Lackland who were infected with the virus and is under a self-quarantine. This case does not yet represent community spread of the virus, but it is impossible to determine who else might be currently infected with COVID-19 in San Antonio. This development also prompted Mayor Ron Nirenberg to declare a public health ...

March 12 Letter from our Senior Pastor regarding coronavirus.

March 12, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
March 12, 2020 Dear members and attenders, As we indicated on Monday in our email correspondence, should the need arise to adjust various aspects of our Sunday morning practices, Redeemer is ready. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that COVID-19, the virus is now a pandemic. There are more than 120,000 cases worldwide and there have been 4,000 deaths. In the United States there are now more than 1,000 cases. In regard to the situation in San Antonio though, nothing has changed since Monday. There is no current ...

RPC ministry partnerships extend across the border.

March 06, 2020
Haley Wachdorf
What started as a series of speaking engagements in Monterrey, Mexico is yielding cross-cultural fruit for Redeemer this year, as a relationship between RPC, the Centro para la Plantación de Iglesias (CPI) church planting network and City to City Latin America grows. In 2018 and 2019, RPC Senior Pastor Tom Gibbs and Associate Pastor Victor Martinez traveled to Monterrey multiple times to provide training in leadership and church planting to CPI planters. CPI is a longstanding church planting network associated with the National Presbyterian ...

Mentors needed for new RPC partner Thru Project.

The first time Robyn Parker ran the dishwasher in her very first apartment after leaving the foster care system at the age of 19, bubbles began to overflow out of the machine and onto the floor. She called the only adult whose phone number she knew — her former case worker, Chris Lopez, who explained to her the difference between dish soap and dishwashing detergent. It wasn’t the last time she would need to call on Chris in a stressful moment. “I didn’t know you were supposed to separate laundry, and I had just bought new jeans, so ...

2019 Ministry Report

January 28, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Read the 2019 Ministry Report here. Dear Redeemer Members and Friends, Today Redeemer celebrates 17 years of worshipping together as a congregation! From the beginning, Redeemer’s vision was to be a church serving not only our members, but an anchor church providing resources, training and support to other churches and ministry partners. We want to make room for more and more people to be brought into the Kingdom of God through church planting, missions and campus ministry in San Antonio, South Texas and Latin America. In 2019, God ...

Three reasons to attend the MLK March with Redeemer

January 08, 2020
Haley Wachdorf
Last year I attended San Antonio’s Martin Luther King, Jr. March for the first time with a group from Redeemer. Before I attended, all I really knew was that San Antonio’s MLK March is the largest in the country. By the end, it was clear to me that just stating the size of the march can’t communicate the significance of this event in the life of our city. If you’ve never attended the march, or even if you have, I want to give you some reasons I think you should join Redeemer’s group at the march this year. Come to see. One of the most ...

Get wisdom at Women's Bible Study this spring

January 02, 2020
Tara Gibbs
Want wisdom? How can you get wisdom? James 1:5 tells us how in one simple step: Ask God. The book of James gives practical sign posts to mark the path of wisdom in the Christian life. This spring our women will encourage one another on this “wisdom path”  by studying the book of James using Courtney Doctor’s study, Steadfast, published by The Gospel Coalition.  Am I a Christian? Would someone observing my life from the outside think that? Or does my life simply mirror the world around me? In five succinct chapters, James holds up a ...
