Got Advent? Need It Now More Than Ever!

November 25, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Do you remember the “Got Milk?” ad campaign from several years ago? At a time when milk was losing favor across the country, these commercials were hugely popular and helped reintroduce milk as a healthy drink option. Even if you’re not a milk drinker there’s probably not one person reading this article who isn’t familiar with this successful campaign. By comparison, I wonder if we might say something similar about the Christian season of Advent. We’ve heard about it, but for most of us it gets reduced to “getting ready for Christmas.” ...

2020 End of Year Giving Update

November 16, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Dear Members and Friends, It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the close of another year. This time last year our favorite topics of conversation were still what to do with our children’s Halloween candy and our plans for the upcoming holidays. What a difference a year makes! I don’t think any of us will ever be able to forget the challenges that arose during the year 2020. In March, of course, our country began to navigate COVID-19, a new coronavirus for which there was no vaccine. Currently, just under 250,000 Americans have lost ...

October 13, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Greetings, Redeemer family! I hope this letter finds you well. I want to pass along to you some updates regarding capacity for our in-person worship services which the Session recently adopted. As you know, since early September Redeemer has been holding two in-person worship services on Sundays with an attendance cap of 175 worshippers per service. These services have gone very smoothly and have been well attended. As your pastor, it has been such a joy to see you again in worship! The Session is also thankful for the congregation’s ...

Hebrews: Hope for Such a Time as This

September 10, 2020
Tara Gibbs
As we launch into fall, it is an unusual time, isn’t it? Some of us feel anxious and overwhelmed as we navigate masks, social distancing, distance learning, uncertainty at work, and anxiety in the news. It may sound strange to say that it’s exactly because of all of this that you should add one more thing to your calendar. But this fall in our women’s Bible studies we will dive into the book of Hebrews together, and I want to encourage you to join us. I think Hebrews is the perfect gift we need right now, and I am excited to share it with ...

New opportunities in an unusual ministry season

September 09, 2020
Haley Wachdorf
When normal life ground to a halt in March of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic upended the routines of school, work, social lives – and church. Redeemer first cancelled in-person worship services on March 15th in response to the pandemic, and had only a matter of days to assemble a livestreamed service of worship. From there, the changes just kept coming. But six months into the uncertainty of the pandemic, as Redeemer embarks on a unique fall season of ministry, the worship, community and mission of Redeemer are flourishing in ways it would ...

Worship Service Sign-Up Starts Soon

August 27, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Greetings, Redeemer! I am looking forward to our return to in-person worship services on September 6th and I hope you are, too. As I mentioned in my last letter, we will be hosting Sunday services at 9:30 and 11 a.m., with each service capped at roughly 40 percent of our sanctuary capacity. To maintain that attendance cap, we will be asking you to RSVP for the service you plan to attend each week. Our first round of worship service sign-ups will start this upcoming Monday, August 31st. Here are some important details about how that process ...

Redeemer Children’s Ministries believes this is the perfect time to establish habits of family worship. To help you in that endeavor, we have worked hard over the past month to develop tools to help you shape the spiritual climate in your ...

Trusting God: When Life Stops Making Sense

August 16, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Recently, one of Redeemer’s members said to me, “We are now at the farthest point that I had imagined COVID-19 impacting my life and family, and it’s still not over. I was not ready for this.” Another of our members had hoped to get away to the Texas coast in Port Aransas for several days of vacation in late July. Within hours after their arrival though, Tropical Storm Hanna had become Hurricane Hanna and was forecast to come ashore on the second day of their trip. Rather than ride out the storm, they packed up their vehicle and traveled back ...

Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good morning, friends and family! I’m writing to inform you that the Redeemer Session has decided to return to in-person worship on Sunday, September 6th. This letter will likely be one of several communications from the church about our re-entry to in-person worship. As you read, please keep in mind that this plan places a high value both on being together and on the safety and ...

In-Person Worship Suspended

June 26, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Dear members and attenders, Like you, I and the Session have been monitoring very closely the surge in COVID-19 cases in San Antonio. Though unwanted, this spike is upon our city and led the Session to meet earlier this afternoon. After discussion, the Session concluded to suspend in-person worship immediately until further notice and return to live-streaming the worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Facebook, YouTube and the Redeemer website. Therefore, this plan now supersedes previous decisions regarding congregational groupings for worship ...

Changes to Worship Groupings

June 09, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good morning, friends and family! Last night the Session had opportunity to evaluate Redeemer’s return to public, in-person worship. All in all, the Session is very encouraged by the process in place and appreciates the congregation’s cooperation and participation. Everyone agreed that Redeemer’s Deacons and those volunteering as usher/greeters have been particularly helpful. Please know that your contributions are significant. Thank you! As you may have noticed on the livestream, however, the worship services have not come close to ...

Thoughts on Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and the Church's Response

June 03, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Last night Tara and I had the privilege of watching our third child, Lucy, walk across the stage and receive her high school diploma. It was a wonderful celebration, filled with thankfulness to God for her accomplishments and anticipation about all she will do in the future. Her big smile and those of her classmates tell the story that we most want for our children—a story of a safe, fair and caring community that nurtures young people to become responsible and contributing citizens. The recent, tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery (2/23) in ...
